Structured Query Language (SQL) is the set of statements with which all programs and users access data in an Oracle Database. Application programs and Oracle tools often allow users access to the database without using SQL directly, but these applications in turn must use SQL when executing the user's request. This chapter provides background information on SQL as used by most database systems.
PL/SQL, the Oracle procedural extension of SQL, is a portable, h2igh-performance transaction-processing language. This chapter explains its advantages and briefly describes its main features and its architecture.
PL/SQL has these advantages:
1. Tight Integration with SQL
2. High Performance
3. High Productivity
4. Portability
5. Scalability
6. Manageability
7. Support for Object-Oriented Programming
8. Support for Developing Web Applications
9. Support for Developing Server Pages
